The quickest way to tell if your garage door spring is broken is to look at the metal shaft directly above your closed door. If you see a visible 2-inch separation or gap in the coiled black steel spring, or if you heard a loud gunshot-like sound and the door will only lift 2 to 6 inches, the spring has snapped.
